The Elders are the playable characters and leaders of your village.
Each Elder brings a few Pips to a new valley at the start of the game, and should they all fall, the elder dies and the game ends. Since each game is a retelling of the story by the elder Matus, if you lose the game he claims that's not how the story went, allowing the player to start a new game/story.
Each Elder represents a unique gameplay mode, with different starting Terrain, Resources, and starting Research Tree unlocks. They may also have unique gameplay effects.

Matus

It's me, Matus! I have many stories to tell, but the story of my life is certainly the most interesting.

| Matus is the first Elder available from the start of the game. He also acts as the game's Narrator. Starts with signpost, forager, 16 wood, and 20 berries. His village starts in The Valley. He is considered to be the basic challenge for dotAGE, providing a simple start with no negative aspects to his gameplay.

Shaman

With a penchant for mysterious words and a strong love for all kinds of animals, the shaman was not an easy woman to work for.

| The Shaman is the second Elder, unlocked through Memories. Her traits encourage avoiding killing animals, generating Fear whenever she does. She also generates Nature whenever she grows a plant. Her village starts in The Glade, and her starting buildings are different to Matus, having the Totem research building, and Tent, and guaranteeing the presence of the Peace Tent and Animal Theater buildings in the research tree.
